Painting a Chalk Board Door - April's DIY

Here's my answer to too many post it notes taped to the kitchen cabinets! I painted the mud closet  door with chalkboard paint.  I love it! I see my "To Do" list or reminders as I walk out the door!

This is the door before I painted it. It's a nice smooth door. That helps with the end results. You'll want the paint to be very smooth after it dries.

Start by taping off the area, Protect it with paper or a cloth to help with clean up later.

I bought my Rust-o-leum Chalk Paint at Home Depot. 1 can was plenty!

 You can see it goes on very shiny. It dries totally flat. Use a sponge roller, not a bristle brush. The paint should be very smooth, no lines or ridges. If you have lines, they will scrape the chalk off when you go to write on the board after it dries.  The paint is very thick and tacky. But do at least 2 coats.

Here is the result after 1 coat, and 4 hours of drying time. I did 3 coats. So It took a couple of days to complete the project. Be patient. It pays off.

Once totally dry, remove painters tape, and take white chalk stick, and color vertical and horizontal. Cover the entire area to prime the surface before you start writing on the board.  Then take a wet cloth and wipe it clean.  Now you are ready to start your art wall,  messages or use however you please!

I drew a pretty little border at the top to finish it off. I left the middle area for notes, etc....

FYI - I used a round cloth Furniture moving pad for an eraser, also I would do a new coat every 6 months to keep it nice and fresh! Using a wet cloth to clean it also works if you want it totally black and clean. I like a little chalk dust on it.

Holidays are great fun with this new door! I have full view of it from my kitchen sink, so I always enjoy the artwork too.
